Great Bustards, Extremadura, Mid-October

A week in Monfrague and the steppes before heading north to Santander to catch the ferry. Night temperatures dipped to as low as 3 degrees with morning frost but the days were gloriously sunny and 22 degrees. It is a nice place to be in October providing you are patient and don't expect birds on the end of a stick. Hen Harriers and Merlins are arriving on the steppes, Lapwings and Golden Plovers mingle with flocks of Great Bustards and Sandgrouse, Cranes are beginning to pass, confiding Hawfinches feast on the autumn berry crop, but, best of all - it is almost devoid of tourists and birdspotters.
